She starts out playing the game, and gets her sense of adventure from it. He has realized that those kind of adventures are best saved for the realm of fiction.Īnd in the epilogue, we watch the cycle start again with Cassie. He completely rejects it as, not a form of entertainment, but as a substitute for the excitement of his past life (Elena would likely react the same way if she found out about Nate's way of escapism in the attic).īut at the end of the last chapter, when he has put away the gun for good, he has actually started to like it. When Elena first tries to get him to play, he scoffs at the idea of getting some sense of adventure from a few pixels on a screen. The Crash Bandicoot symbolismĪnother hint at how Nate has changed, is how he feels about playing Crash on Elena's PS1. And the stuff from past adventures? That's all stored away safely in a closet, and is no longer used to keep the illusion of adventure alive because they have found a balance between their family life, and their life as explorers. In the little side room, Elena is actually developing photos of their undertakings (which they never had before). The cottage is cozy as all hell, with tons of natural light and out in the open there are all kinds of relics, maps and other archaeological stuff they are working on. But once you get inside it becomes even more clear, all without a single line of dialogue. The fact that there is a whole building dedicated to that part of their lives, which they are comfortable leaving unlocked, and that it's not hidden away in a dusty attic, already tells you a lot about what happened in the past years. They now have two buildings, the main house for their family life, and the cottage for their research.

He and Elena have come clean and embraced that part, not just of Nate, but of them both, and are leading open lives as legitimate archaeologists. And later in the game she does say that she missed the adventure.)īut the small cottage in the Epilogue is the exact opposite. There's a box of tissues on her desk, indicating that she might be crying sometimes. (On a side note, I don't think Elena is happy either, she is just better at hiding it. Most of the light is artificial and comes from the lamp, further adding to the "wild animal in a cage"-vibe.

They also gave the room only little natural light. The room is messy and the askew attic walls in combination with the shelves that don't fit right anywhere because of them, make it clear that this entire integral part of Nate's personality is shoved into this room and has no space to breathe. The environmental designers did not fuck around here, and made the room almost uncomfortable with a slight sense of claustrophobia. The attic is a spot on representation of Nate's mind at the time. The fact that their house is almost entirely dedicated to their family life, and the adventurous part is shoved into the tiny attic, goes to show how unbalanced their life together is. He obviously isn't happy with the life he is leading, and hides it from Elena. In chapter 4, we see that Nate has made the attic into a mausoleum of his past where he tries to keep his old life as an explorer alive. Two parallels between Chapter 4 and the Epilogue that I didn't see anyone point out yet, so I thought I'd share. Search the sub for these questions and you'll find more than enough relevant threads.
